What’s the appointment? Glen Saunders has taken the position of senior research analyst for International Data Corporation (IDC).

What’s the job he is leaving? Glen previously worked as the marketing intelligence manager at Telecom NZ where he attended mainly to the mobile side of the telecommunications spectrum. “I basically performed research into the computer business and tracked any changes within the market.”

What kind of work does his new role require? Looking into how different Telco operators operate within the market while checking into the different aspects the government may be approaching Telco regulations. He spends a majority of time looking at developments overseas through the wider IDC group and looking at the implications they bring to the local market in New Zealand. “We provide a lot of advice based on our research to various telecommunication companies and other associated parties in the country.

So what got him interested in the role? “It was almost a natural progression from what I was doing at Telecom,” says Glen. “The telecommunication industries are quite high profile at the moment with many exciting changes constantly taking place within the industry.” Glen has a strong interest in the telecom industry, especially regarding how the way the industry is changing. “You never know what’s going to happen with each day.”

Where has he worked previously to Telecom and IDC? Prior to Telecom Glen used to work for the Ministry of Economic Development where he looked after some of their telecoms and certain policies under the Labour Government at the time before National headed in.

So how did he move from his role at MED to Telecom and most recently IDC? “It was just a good opportunity at the time when the job offers were given to me.” Glen did policy work for three years at the Ministry of Economic Development before taking up his previous position at Telecom as marketing intelligence manager.

What qualifications has he attained? Glen is experienced in ‘competitor intelligence’, which he says isn’t a common discipline in New Zealand but is quite common within large US businesses. “Its almost a sub segment of marketing that looks thoroughly at computer strategy.” In terms of professional qualifications, Glen has attained a postgraduate Degree in Marketing which he picked up during his time at Victoria University in Wellington, “where I was born and bred,” added Glen.
