The new Ministry of Science and Innovation started work today and Research, Science and Technology Minister Wayne Mapp has been given a new title, Minister of Science and Innovation.

The ministry was formed by merging the former ministry with the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology.

"New Zealand needs to raise productivity, diversify our exports and become a smart economy," Dr Mapp said at today's launch.

"We need to develop more efficient ways of working and better, more valuable products to sell to the world."

Dr Mapp said the new ministry would work closely with business, research organisations, the Ministry of Economic Development and other government agencies to drive science and innovation.
