New Zealand has been ranked among the top percentage of countries in the world for employee leave entitlements.
Workers here are offered among the highest levels of statutory holiday entitlement (20 days) in Asia Pacific, but rank below the majority of Western Europe.
Ranked 8 on the global scale, the data comes from Mercer’s Worldwide Benefit and Employment Guidelines, which provides an overview of employee regulation and employment practices across 62 different countries.
Compared to other Asia Pacific regions, New Zealand employees have the potential to take 20 days statutory holiday entitlement and 11 days public holiday, adding up to 31 days in total.
India, Thailand and Malaysia all make provisions for the most public holidays in the region with 16 days followed by Japan, South Korea and the Philippines all with 15 days. Indonesia provides 14 days, Taiwan 13 and Hong Kong with 12 days.
New Zealand, Singapore, China and Pakistan all provide 11 days with employees in Australia at 10 days and Vietnam entitled to 9.
According to Georgina Harley, leader of Mercer’s Information Product Solutions business, holiday entitlements are an important and often undervalued part of a broader rewards strategy.
“With pay rises muted and often below the rate of inflation, companies are searching for other ways to motivate their staff.
“Companies recognise that a healthy, happy workforce is a productive one and this feeds directly to the bottom line.”
