Radio New Zealand has appointed "seasoned" broadcasting journalist, Simon Mercep, as the new co-presenter of Morning Report, which it bills as the country's highest rating breakfast radio programme.
Simon Mercep is well known to television viewers following his eight years as an investigative journalist on TVNZ’s popular consumer affairs show Fair Go, and his last three years with the highly rated current affairs programme Sunday.
To many, he'll seem mild mannered - at least in comparison to the pitbull Mr Plunket.
Checkpoint's Mary Wilson would have been closer to the Plunket style, should the state broadcaster have sought to maintain it.
Simon Mercep will take up his new role in January, working alongside long-time Morning Report host Geoff Robinson.
Morning Report is New Zealand's highest rating breakfast programme according to the All New Zealand Radio Survey from Nielsen Media. The programme has the biggest radio audience and largest station share of all radio networks in New Zealand, RNZ said in a statement this afternoon.
Mr Plunket was in a long-running, acrimonious employment dispute with the RNZ - centering on his desire to write a column for Metro - before resigning recently (read: Plunket moves to ZB, with PR, TV3, Metro gigs on the side).
