After frequent failures by Labour and the Greens to work together over successive elections, the two gave up sparring today to take on the government together at the next election.

And they plan to rule together once elected.

They say they will work together on “matters of mutual interest.”

“If there were ever a signal that the government was out of touch with New Zealand, it was last week’s budget,” Labour leader Andrew Little says.

Green Party co-leader Metiria Turei says the memorandum of understanding will help the parties "work toward a strong new economy that builds jobs but also tackling climate change.”

Both party leaders say the current government has “failed middle New Zealand.”

Mr Little says if elected, Grant Robertson would be finance minister of a coalition government but, beyond that, no discussions have been held.

Mr Little says he will be speaking at the Green Party’s annual meeting next week.
