NZ farmers would be peasants without Fonterra monopoly - agribusiness expert

If Fonterra didn’t dominate the market, Kiwi farmers would be peasants, an agribusiness expert says.

Waikato University Professor and NBR print edition columnist Jacqueline Rowarth told TV3’s The Nation she didn’t think there needed to be more New Zealand dairy companies as competition for the dairy giant.

“They’ve [Fonterra] only got 86%; if we dropped it below 80% it’s not called a monopoly.

“The strength of Fonterra, without it, New Zealand farmers would be peasants.”

She said having a large dairy co-operative allowed the price of milk to be kept in line with what farmers needed.
