New Zealand troops are not involved in the offensive against Taleban fighters in Afghanistan, Prime Minister John Key says.

International and Afghan forces launched the biggest offensive in the eight-year war two days ago.

New Zealand has a Special Air Service unit and a provincial reconstruction team operating in Afghanistan.

Asked at his post-cabinet press conference yesterday whether New Zealanders were taking part in the offensive he replied "I can confirm that New Zealand wasn't involved".
