Online advertising rose during the first quarter of 2011 to $68.12 million, a 20% increase over the first quarter of 2010, according to a PriceWaterhouseCoopers study carried out for the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB), a group representing major online publishers.

However, the result also represented a dip over the fourth quarter of 2010, when online ads hit an all-time high of $71.11 million.

The first quarter of the calendar year has historically seen a seasonal dip. This year, the IAB says the Christchurch quake also affected the market.

All categories were up strongly year-on-year, but serach and directories (which includes Google and Yellow) grew the most strongly.

• Search & Directories: up 29.81%
• Display: up 22.24%
• Classifieds: up 10.15%.

For the first quarter, only classified bucked the downward trend, growing just over 6%.
