NZ POLITICS DAILY: Smoke, no fire, in Israeli spy allegations

PLUS: John Key in Washington | Electorate deals | Roy Morgan poll.

There’s still a lot of smoke, but no apparent fire yet in the Israeli spy allegation stories. It’s also difficult to fathom just how this will play out in terms of domestic parliamentary politics.

The most obvious issue so far is in terms of how the Prime Minister has dealt with the emerging scandal, with numerous reports evaluating his response yesterday – see, for example, Tracy Watkins’s PM John Key finds himself on shaky ground. The whole scandal has certainly taken the gloss off John Key’s trip to Washington.

Most journalists and commentators seem unimpressed with Key’s reluctance to answer questions as well as his U-turn on the issue, but some also acknowledge that he was simply ‘caught on the hop’. The whole line about it not being ‘in the national interest to discuss’ is also receiving some critical analysis, with some asking if the hush is simply designed to avoid embarrassing Israel.

Phil Goff is especially critical of Key’s response – see: Key mishandled spy issue – Goff. And Keith Locke is asking some good questions too: ‘There is a reluctance to say or do anything that embarrasses the Israeli government, particularly as the current National government has adopted a stronger pro-Israeli foreign policy stance than Labour. It would be good if there was more public scrutiny of this’ (More information needed on spy story).

The spy story is being covered very well by Radio New Zealand. And the most interesting item so far, has been a Morning Report interview with British Mossad expert Gordon Thomas (audio), which is also reported in Lane Nichols’ Israelis 'likely an official covert team'. All of this suggests that we might soon see a shift in the Government’s orientation towards the state of Israel.
