NZ POLITICS DAILY: Whaleoil's shotgun attacks on Labour

Party tries to get back on the front foot, but Goff in a weak position.

Whaleoil (aka blogger Cameron Slater) is certainly making a nuisance of himself for the Labour Party. His daily shotgun approach of barraging them in any way possible occasionally hits the mark, and today he seems to have done that again with his Official Information Act request re-igniting the SIS vs Phil Goff stoush over whether the Labour leader had been properly briefed about the Israeli spy allegations – see Tracy Watkins’ story SIS misled public – Goff.

Labour is obviously trying to front foot the minor scandal and take the initiative in attacking the head of the SIS, and the fight could go either way, but certainly at this stage Goff looks to be in a weak position. That’s certainly David Farrar’s analysis: Goff still can not admit he is wrong. Meanwhile, the Dim-Post and John Pagani are asking some obvious questions about how a rightwing blogger such as Whaleoil can so successfully be using the Official Information Act where others aren’t.

The launch of the new Election Results website, which is based on iPredict prediction material, is another boost for this year’s focus (or obsession?) with political opinion polls and predictions. The site has a number of decent commentaries on electoral projections – see, for example, Matthew Hooton’s Easy profits look possible on safe seats or, say, Ian Llewellyn’s Focus On Waitakere. And across in Australia, Centrebet is also taking bets on our general elections – see: $5,000 bet on National winning election. It seems that the betting company is only paying $1.10 for a National win, yet $6.50 for Labour. But for much more analytical projections, see Colin James’ Bold or timid: how will National campaign? and Vernon Small’s It's awful medicine but we need it.
