New Zealand fashion played a part in the historic changeover of government in the UK this week, with Samantha Cameron wearing a garment designed by local fashion designer Emilia Wickstead when she entered Downing Street with her husband for the first time yesterday.

Ms Wickstead has designed a wardrobe for Mrs Cameron, including the purple garment she wore when she entered 10 Downing Street in front of the world yesterday.

The New Zealand-born designer has built up a loyal client base in her home town of Auckland and her second home of Milan, where she moved as a teenager, holding invitation-only consultations in New Zealand every six months.

Now based in London where she is focusing on her own designer label, Ms Wickstead has also spent some time working for a number of renowned fashion designers including Giorgio Armani, Luella, Proenza Schouler and Narciso Rodriquez.

She was a recipient of a $10,000 donation from the Arts Foundation and patrons Gus and Irene Fisher.
