NZX has swiftly replaced Geoff Brown, with Fiona Mackenzie named as the new head of markets.

Mr Brown – who had been with the NZX for eight years – abruptly retired on Wednesday, with no explanation given for his sudden departure.

NZX has wasted no time in appointing Ms Mackenzie, who has been head of liquidity and traded products for the past year, as his replacement as head of markets.

Ms Mackenzie’s new role will include all traded products, the NZX Listings function, and the market data portfolio.

She also heads the NZX Auckland office, which is NZX's base for new tradable futures and commodities products, and has been leading the team building the derivatives market offering in New Zealand.

Ms Mackenzie said her focus will be in the areas identified by the Capital Markets Development Taskforce.

"An important first step will be to assess potential new market structures, as well as promote the value of listing and public equity in an environment where - for the first time in a long time - companies will be able to compete fairly with property for the investor dollar."

Ms Mackenzie has previously worked in the US, on Asia (ex Japan) equities at Morgan Stanley, based in New York and San Francisco, and at Credit Suisse in New York City.
