Facebook says its membership has cracked the 500 million mark.

Putting that in perspective, Technologizer notes there are now 1.8 billion people using the internet out of a world population of 6.9 billion.

One in 14 people on the planet now have a Facebook profile (read more Technologizer stats here).

For a site with such planetary scale, Facebook is bringing relatively few dollars through the door.

A recent estimate held that the social network's revenue should pass the $US1 billion mark this year (The Wall Street Journal figures a more modest $US710 million).

The privately held Facebook, which numbers Microsoft and a Russian venture capitalist company among its minority investors, claims to be profitable.

A Nielsen social media study released earlier this week found 1.8 million or 42% of New Zealanders were active social media users.

Of that 1.8 million, 82% used Facebook and 27% Twitter.
