Wellington’s open source software conference buzzed from initiative ideas and international keynote speakers last week.
The Linux conference is one of the largest in the world and the second time it has been held in New Zealand. More than 650 delegates descended on Wellington last week, more than organisers expected due to the recovering global economy.
Open Source Society president Don Christie said the atmosphere was “buzzing” and the conference had been “fantastic”. Tomorrow there is an open day for members of the public where people can learn more about open source software.
Global giants Google, HP, and IBM sponsored the conference together with local company Internet NZ.
Mr Christie said that although Google’s threat to pull out of China due to censorship and privacy issues wasn’t discussed, the impact of changing copyright legislation and how that would affect open source software development was.
“There was a strong stream of technical talk regarding Linux, general programming language. But the keynotes focused on the wider impact of open source software on society and the philosophy (of it),” Mr Christie said.
