Pacific leaders donned bright shirts and got down to Pacific Islands Forum business at the stunningly beautiful Havannah resort in Vanuatu today.

There was talk about Prime Minister John Key's shirt resembling a paintball accident, but he said he was pleased with it and that it would make a good addition to the parliamentary collection.

Media and officials got to enjoy the Havannah's surroundings only for an hour or so before being ushered away as leaders were left to try to add substance to previous discussions about issues facing their region.

That included trade, aid, economic development, climate change, security, fisheries and Fiji -- suspended from the 16-member forum until its interim military government moves to restore democracy there.

Other prime ministers, including Julia Gillard from Australia, are absent because domestic elections have taken precedence.

Later today the leaders will publicly discuss what progress was made at the leaders' retreat.
