Education Minister Hekia Parata is not ruling out one day running for leader of the National Party.

The MP has come under scrutiny over the past 18 months with decisions in her portfolio - but still has eyes on the top job.

When asked about her prime ministerial ambitions on TV's The Nation, Ms Parata said: "I aspire to be the best possible Minister of Education ... I love what I do, and I do what I love, in every part of my career I have aspired to do better."

Earlier in the interview, the MP said she felt very comfortable with the National Party's policies.

"The values of the National Party are what resonate with me and my family, which is that, you know, we've got to earn and build a productive economy, family are the cornerstones of community, education and personal responsibility and accountability," Ms Parata said.
