New Zealand First leader Winston Peters is not an electorate candidate in this month's election.

However, Mr Peters, MP for Tauranga from 1984 to 2005, is top of his party's list.

A statement released by the New Zealand First board said Mr Peter's time would be better spent concentrating his efforts on gaining as much of the party vote throughout New Zealand as possible.

It was not possible for Mr Peters to concentrate on an electorate, while campaigning the length and breadth of New Zealand, nor was it fair for an electorate to have an absentee candidate, the statement said.

In a Horizons poll released on Monday, New Zealand First attracted 7.8% of the vote, up 1.5% on a week earlier.

The top 10 people of the New Zealand First list, and the electorates they are standing in, are: 1, Winston Peters; 2, Tracey Martin, Rodney; 3, Andrew Williams, North Shore; 4, Richard Prosser, Waimakariri; 5, Barbara Stewart, Waikato; 6, Brenda Horan, Tauranga; 7, Denis O’Rourke, Port Hills; 8, Asenati Taylor, Manukau East; 9, Helen Mulford, Pakuranga; 10, Hugh Barr, Ohariu.
