Cheerfully ignoring his relatively moderate record in coalition with previous Labour and National governments, New Zealand First leader had made a tub-thumping comeback speech.

“Let's take back our country. Starting in 2011, let's start putting New Zealand and New Zealanders First,” Mr Peters told his party’s annual conference in Christchurch today.

"Let's control our own destiny - and not jump to demands from some foreign boardroom," he added in an apparent reference to the government's Hobbit deal.

The leader did not detail why the new war on Johnny Foreigner had to wait until the New Year; presumably there is Christmas shopping and other chores to be dispatched first.

New Zealand First was forced out of Parliament in 2008 after failing to win an electorate or the required 5% of the party vote needed to ensure representation, but Mr Peters said it would go into next year's election in a stronger position.\

But although he "sensed" a groundswell of resurgent support, the leader warned:

"Take nothing for granted!

"There are those in New Zealand who will do anything to keep New Zealand First out of Parliament."

He's right - they're called voters, quipped one internet wag.
