Oil crisis prompts government to cut fuel tax

Public transport fares also to be halved for three months.

The government will cut the fuel tax by 25 cents a litre from midnight tonight for three months to help families cope with petrol prices of more than $3 a litre.

It will also reduce the road user charge by the same amount and halve the cost of public transport.
