The first public poll on next year’s MMP referendum showed 72% of voters surveyed want MMP dumped or changed.

According to UMR Research released today, only 23% of 750 voting age people surveyed wanted to retain MMP, with 5% unsure of what electoral system they wanted.

The poll questioned people on the two questions to be put to the public at the 2011 MMP referendum.

Forty two percent preferred retaining MMP but with changes, while 32% wanted to dump MMP altogether in favour of another system.

Women (55%) favoured retaining MMP, while men (49%) favoured MMP with changes.

Over 60s, retired people and people in rural areas were more likely to ant a change to the electoral system.

Maori, under 30s and those on incomes between $50 and $70,000 were more likely to support retaining MMP.

Asked what system they would support if MMP was to be dumped, 37% preferred first past the post (FPP), 18% preferred single transferable vote (STV), 12% preferred preferential voting (PV) and 4% preferred supplementary member (SM).

A third question showed only 23% wanted to keep MMP, compared to 72% who wanted MMP dumped or kept with changes.
