Plans for the expansion of Ports of Auckland have come to a stop following a Council meeting held in the Town Hall this morning.
Expansion of the Auckland port into the Waitemata Harbour has been halted by the Auckland City Council, but not permanently.
The decision made this morning at a Town Hall Council meeting has halted the expansion indefinitely, with plans to extend the port by 250 meters into the harbour now in limbo.
The Council voted today to review the role of Ports of Auckland in depth before setting sail on the port’s further expansion.
Plans for its expansion have come under attack in the past, including accusations that the Council had rushed the proposal and given the all-clear to expand the Ports of Auckland before serious reviews had been made.
Expansion plans for the port outlined a 40-year timeline for its construction, in hopes of attracting a 400% increase in traffic by the start of 2055.
Councillors are currently reviewing the final touches to the draft Auckland Plan before it is taken into effect later this month.
