Auckland mayor Len Brown has revealed the route of an underground CBD rail link that he said is “the most critical element” of improving the city’s global urban competitive edge.

The preferred route revealed would run between Mt Eden and Britomart with stops at three stations at Symonds St/Kyhber Pass Rd, Karangahape Rd/Pitt St and Albert/Victoria Sts.

“The link would double the number of trains that can go through Britomart, let Aucklanders get around the region more easily, and reduce congestion on our roads,” Mr Brown said.

“The potential urban redevelopment and additional growth derived from investment in this infrastructure would make the project transformational not just for Auckland, but for New Zealand as a whole.”

According to the report released by APB&B, existing transport becomes narrower closer to the city centre creating congestion around the CBD and our current network will be at capacity before 2020.

The proposed rail link would have the ability to run 6 trains on each route at peack times, improving to 7 trains an hour after 2030.

Rail passenger numbers increased from 2.5 million a year to 8.5 million a year when the train system rejuvenation started in 2003 and stations were redeveloped.

The total 95th percentile estmated cost including property would be $2.38 billion.
