Plans for private companies to own new schools are moving along with the Government deciding to getting a business case done.
The Government previously said it would look into public-private partnerships (PPPs) for the running of certain aspects of schools.
Today Finance Minister Bill English and Education Minister Anne Tolley said the Government would proceed to a 'stage two' business case for a PPP for new school property. That would include a decision on specific schools and tenders could be sought early next year subject to Cabinet approval.
Mr English said modest savings could be achieved.
Under a PPP, the operation of the school would still be in the hands of its board. The private sector would only be responsible for the care of the school property: design, construction and maintenance, while the land would still be owned by the government.
