Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee yesterday said speculation high-ranking civil servant Martyn Dunne had been given the job was premature. Mr Dunne would be taking up a new role as High Commissioner to Australia, he said.
Mr Dunne, a former military man who heads Customs, had been doing some work for the State Services Commission to help with the establishment of the rebuild organisation.
He was considered for the position but would be taking up the High Commissioner role, Mr Brownlee said.
Prime Minister John Key was asked on Newstalk ZB whether Mr Dunne had turned down the role because he did not want to work with Mr Brownlee.
"I don't think that's an accurate description, but I don't know all of the details," Mr Key responded.
Mr Key said he could not name the person who had been given the job but an announcement was expected tomorrow.
