Realestate.co.nz says its mobile app has been downloaded 70,000 times during its first year of availability.

The site says 22% of its traffic is via those using a mobile device.

The mobile app was opened by 85,000 people during March.

Of those, it says nearly half were using an iPad, the company says - immediately drawing the response from NBR reader Paul Matthews - why is there no native iPad app for the site?. Realestate.co.nz chief executive Alistair Helm replied that many were happy to browse the full version of the website on their tablet.

The iPhone represented 40% of all mobile users and Google Android devices 14% of all mobile users.

Mr Helm told NBR the iPhone app worked well on the larger iPad screen. Other browsers liked to use the full site's flick-through slideshow function on their iPad.

"We are exploring the opportunity of a dedicated iPad app now that we see the extent of iPad usage," Mr Helm told NBR.

"We would envisage a very different experience from the smartphone app we have at this time - something more akin to a magazine browsing experience with the added appeal of geo-location capability - making life easier for property seekers which is what we focus on."
