NZ Lotteries has hit the jackpot with a $32.4 million increase in sales in the six months to December last year, compared to the corresponding time in 2010.

Profits for the state-owned entity also rose by $9 million in the first-half year surpassing the previous year’s result.

Sales for the Lotto company hit a record of $478.6 million, higher than the previous year’s amount of $446.2 million.

The $9 million increase in profits for the company also reached a record high, bringing the total up to $96.4 million in profits.

An ongoing Powerball jackpot run, which reached a total of $23 million in August last year, benefited NZ Lotto sales greatly along with an increase in Big Wednesday and Instant Kiwi sales.

A 2% decrease in operating expenses resulted in $28.5 million in costs.
