NZX-listed Restaurant Brands [NZX: RBD] has opened its second Carl’s Jr burgers outlet in Christchurch.

The latest one at Hornby follows last month’s opening of one at The Bush Inn, Riccarton.

There are already 18 Carl’s Jr restaurants operating in the North Island

The two new Christchurch restaurants employ around 60 staff.

Restaurant Brands general manager sales and marketing Geraldine Oldham says the new South Island restaurants have been built to better reflect a burger dining experience “that gives our diners a taste of America, down under.”

The brand “transformation” includes a new logo, packaging and restaurant design.

Carl’s Jr restaurants offer table service, a free-refill drinks station and a condiments selection where customers can help themselves.

The first Carl’s Jr was opened in July 2011.

As previously reported, Restaurant Brands net profit after tax for the 28 weeks ended September 2015 was $13.4 million, up $1.9 million or 16.7% on the prior corresponding period on sales of $210 million, up 13.1%.

The company says the result was driven by strong performance from KFC and increased volumes from the new Carl’s Jr brand.

The share price rose strongly before April and has been steady at $5 this month

Meanwhile, Restaurant Brands this week confirmed its agreement to acquire 100% of the shares in QSR Pty Ltd, the largest KFC franchisee in New South Wales, Australia.

The price was partly satisfied with the issue of 5000,000 new ordinary shares to Eyeon QSR Pty.

The shares issued to Eyeon are subject to a 12-month escrow period, during which they cannot be sold subject to limited exceptions.

Restaurant Brands also says the owner of Eyeon, Stephen Copulos, will join the board of Restaurant Brands.

Restaurant Brands New Zealand Ltd (RBD) was formed to acquire the New Zealand restaurant and takeaway operations of KFC and Pizza Hut in 1997.
