Research in Motion has set a firm date for its new range of BlackBerry smartphones: January 30.
The Canadian company says handsets based on its new BlackBerry 10 software have gone to more than 50 phone companies worldwide.
There will be both keyboard and touchscreen BlackBerries based on the new software.
In a demo (see BBC video below) the touchscreen model looks impressive, with a slick interface, true multitasking social media messaging woven into a single inbox, and not just predictive text but predictive sentences.
IDC says BlackBerry's share of the worldwide smartphone market has falled from 34% to under 5% in the past year.
The question, though: is it too late to peg back Apple and Android's lead?
Some investors don't seem to think so. RIMM shares jumped more than 3% to $US8.81 today – a nice little bump, even if they have some distance to go to match their high of $US144 in 2008 as the first iPhone was released.
