S6 NZ availability: Samsung gives Apple another free hit

Why does Samsung keep doing this?

Telcos are releasing their pricing today for the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, ahead of the flagship phones' April 11 release.

Spark was first out of the blocks (that I saw). It will sell the S6 32GB off-contract for $1099 S6 Edge 32GB for $1349.

It's also selling the 64GB models of each handset, for $1249 and $1499 respectively. But where are the 128GB models?

"Samsung has opted to not bring the 128GB model to NZ," a Spark spokesman says.

This policy baffles me.

The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus run to 128GB models, and all onboard storage options are available to NZ buyers.

Samsung's giving Apple a free hit. In a world of burgeoning apps and high def video, capacity matters. And of course some top-shelf buyers simply want the phone with the best specs, whether they actually use them or not.

Keen Galaxy buyers can order off-shore, of course (again), but that means they miss out on contract deals.

Pity. Other than the 128GB option being AWOL for Kiwis, the S6 and S6 Edge are excellent phones. Highlights include a move from a plastic case to metal, a camera that's ready for action in under a second, decluttered software, a wireless charging option and superfast plugged-in charging (10 minutes charge will give you four hours' battery life, Samsung says). The S6 Edge adds a display that curves at the sides, providing a way to see messages even if the phone is upside down (you can give five contacts their own colour code for flashing message alerts, too).
