Salmon reigns supreme at NZ Food Awards

Mt Cook Alpine Salmon was named the Supreme Award winner at the Massey University-hosted New Zealand Food Awards at the Viaducts Events Centre, Auckland, last night.
The judges said the South Island company's Saiku-Grade Salmon for sushi stood out for its excellent taste and the innovative operations system that ensured the farmed fish reached its customers in the best condition.
Chief judge Ray McVinnie said the quality had changed the world of salmon.
"A farmed salmon with the tastes of free-running river salmon,” he said.
Mt Cook Alpine Salmon is situated in a man-made hydro canal running between Lake Tekapo and Lake Pukaki. The company also took top honours in the Food Operations awards category.
Other major winners were Tauranga-based Reunion Food Company for Heilala Vanilla Syrup, which won the Enterprise category, and Hubbard Foods for its breakfast cereal Real, which won the Best Product category.
Goodman Fielder's gluten-free bread won the best research and development award, while the grocer's choice award – chosen by supermarket operators – went to Enzafood's Freshfields sachet-sized apple sauce.
