New Zealand’s largest online job lister Seek attracted a record of almost 2.7 million jobseeker website visits in January alone, an increase of 6% of the same time last year.

The site’s peak visitation figures have been released along with the latest Seek Employment Index (SEI) data, which measures the amount of new job listings on Seek against the number of applications for those listed jobs.

Typical for this time of year, the SEI experienced a 9.7% rise in January due to reduced applications.

This is likely due to the New Year bringing increased interest in new jobs that are yet to be applied for, explains Seek New Zealand’s general manager Janet Faulding.

“A huge number of jobseekers are still viewing the numerous opportunities on Seek while contemplating their next career move,” says Ms Faulding.

Seek’s Job Market Update, an independent study commissioned by the jobs website, backs up these trends along with its record-breaking visitation figures with the Job Market Update showing 76% of New Zealand’s workforce keeping an eye out for new career opportunities.

Jobseekers are not the only ones taking an extra step forward into the New Year.

“Employers often return from the holiday period looking to hire new staff and we are certainly finding this is to be true with more than 16,000 jobs currently advertised on Seek,” added Ms Faulding.

The five fastest moving jobs on the Seek website in January 2012 all experienced more than 100% growth, with Waiting Staff positions increasing the most at 159%.

Outbound Sales roles rose 137% from December while the advertised number of Gardening and Landscaping, and Printing and Publishing Service positions both increased by 120%.

Litigation and Dispute Resolution roles rounded out the to five fastest growth industries on Seek increasing by 105%.
