The Serious Fraud Office has signed a new Memorandum of Understanding with the New Zealand Police, saying it formalises an already close working relationship.
It covers a range of law enforcement activities between the two agencies, and envisages joint operations on major financial crime investigations, prosecutions and asset recovery.
In recent months the SFO has undertaken forensic accounting work for the Police on a number of cases. At the same time, Police investigators have been seconded into the SFO to assist with a wide range of major investigations, including those of Hanover Finance and other collapsed finance companies.
“A number of recent cases have highlighted the even greater impact that we can have on financial crime when we combine our skills, knowledge and resources," SFO ceo Adam Feeley says.
“The introduction of Police secondments to the SFO has been an enormous help to managing our workload, and staff from both agencies have been able to share valuable skills and experience. Similarly, we have and will continue to assign our forensic accountants to joint investigations which will help achieve good results in those cases,” he added.
