The victim of what has been described as a freakish shark attack at Auckland’s Muriwai beach yesterday afternoon was a television advertising director.
Adam Strange (46) had worked at Silverscreen productions for more than 10 years before starting his own gig, adamstrange.tv
A regular swimmer at the beach, he was attacked and repeatedly dragged under water by a huge shark, believed to be a great white, and died before help could arrive.
Up to four other sharks were seen in the bloodied water before armed police in a helicopter and an inflatable surf lifesaving boat fired at them, driving them off so Mr Strange's body could be recovered.
A Muriwai resident, he was married and is the father of a two-year-old daughter.
Muriwai and other nearby west coast beaches have been closed until further notice.
According to his online director’s profile at Joyride Films, Mr Strange had worked on Telecom XT’s ads featuring British Top Gear star Richard Hammond with Saatchi & Saatchi.
He had also directed work for the New Zealand Rugby Football Union for the Rugby World Cup.
The ad maker’s work was largely focused on TV commercials for the South-East Asian market involving ads for Pepsi, Casio and Fatima.
According to his website, Mr Strange had been shortlisted for the Young Directors Award at the Cannes International Advertising Awards.
