Silver Fern Farms has confirmed the sacking of 174 staff from its Christchurch and Belfast operations today.
The lamb cutting, rendering and casings department at the meat processor’s Christchurch site are to close following the conclusion of employee consultation.
Chief executive Keith Cooper said the closures were a result of the company’s focus on streamlining business operations and optimising efficiencies.
The company said it began the consultation process on June 14.
Mr Cooper said SFF was attempt to assist employees and, where possible, offer alternative employment at other plants where vacancies exists.
