The Government could resume contributions to the New Zealand Superannuation fund within six years, Finance Minister Bill English says.
Last year the Government suspended contributions for up to 10 years saying they could not afford them.
Yesterday, Mr English said the economy was improving faster than expected.
He told Grey Power's annual meeting in Christchurch that meant it was six instead of 10 years until the Government resumed contributions.
"If the economy picks up a bit faster again, we'll get to that point sooner."
Labour associate finance spokesman Clayton Cosgrove said the suspension of payments had created uncertainty and instability and a six-year freeze could still undermine the fund.
