Solid Energy has agreed to buy Pike River Coal's stockpiles of about 20,000 tonnes of coal.
The coal would not have met Pike's future orders, Pike River Coal chairman John Dow said.
"The terms of this sale will see Pike receive full net market value for this hard coking coal once on-sold to an end-user customer," he said.
The deal was another example of the "extraordinary support" Pike had received from Solid Energy's management and staff since the November 19 coal mine disaster which claimed 29 lives.
"They have stood with us from the outset of this tragedy, providing significant support for the rescue and recovery effort."
Solid Energy communications director Vicki Blyth said the company would place the coal on the international market.
