As the tail of Cyclone Gita hits New Zealand, Spark has made its phonebox-mounted wi-fi network free throughout New Zealand.
The telco says people don't have to be a Spark customer to access the free broadband, and no password is required.
Anyone within range of a one of Spark's 730 wi-fi hotspots can the networked named "Spark wi-fi zone" and click to join the network, the telco says. A map of wi-fi locations is here.
Vodafone says any of its customer evacuated from their home due to the severe weather is eligible for free call diversion from their Vodafone landline to their mobile.
The telco is also offering free mobile data for displaced people who have both their home broadband and mobile plan with Vodafone.
