UPDATE / 5pm: "Voice, text, and 4G data services should now be working normally nationwide," Spark spokeswoman Ellie Cross says.

"There are a few 3G sites in Auckland CBD that are still coming back online, but otherwise normal service has resumed."

She adds, "The issues today affected around 30% of our mobile customers."

EARLIER / 2.15pm: Spark says it is trying to fix problems with its mobile network that have hit customers nationwide since 11.04am this morning.

As of 2.15pm, there was no estimated time to fix the issue.

Some users around the country have been unable to use mobile data. The company's social media service says other mobile services could be affected as well.

"Restoration is under way and we hope to see a full return to service soon. Part of the recovery process means some customers may experience congestion while they are trying to connect to the data network, " spokeswoman Ellie Cross says

"The initial cause was a fault on our billing platform that had a knock-on effect on devices authenticating to the mobile network. This caused an authentication ‘traffic jam’ – the best metaphor would be a crowd of people all trying to get through a door at once."
