Speaker of the House Lockwood Smith is to visit Washington to push New Zealand's trade agenda.

A former Trade Minister, Dr Smith plans to use his contacts in the United States during his trip there from October 11 to 19.

The government asked him to make the visit to ensure that progress on free trade contiunued, Dr Smith said.

“Negotiations have been on-going on the Trans Pacific Partnership, and I would like to see momentum on important potential agreements like this continued.”

Dr Smith’s itinerary for the visit includes calls on Capitol Hill with various members of Congress, and meetings with representatives of Treasury, the National Economic Council and other organisations.
