Spending on Wellington airport to rise

Spending on Wellington airport will have to rise to accommodate predicted passenger numbers, one of its owners says.

Capital spending at Wellington airport has averaged between $20-25 million a year since 1998.

That was the year Infratil bought its 66% share in the airport from the Crown.

The latest Infratil Update, for September 2011, said over the next five years the level of investment is expected to be slightly greater, before it picks up as the airport expands its facilities to accommodate the approximately 10 million passengers a year forecast for 2030.

Over the last five years $45 million has been invested in three distinct projects; the road-bridge extension to the south, the extension and removal of obstacles to the north, and a new overlay surface, the Update said.

“Future runway modules may include a bridge over the road to the north and extension into Evans Bay, which could add 200m at a cost of about $60 million.”

Greater separation between the runway and taxiway is also possible to allow an increase in peak-time aircraft movements, it said.
