A recreational fishing survey, costing $5 million, will start this year, Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Phil Heatley says.

He said the survey was the largest study into recreational fishing carried out in a decade and would run for four years.

It would consider how many people were fishing, diving and gathering shellfish, where they fish and how much they catch.

Research was scheduled to start in the 2011-2012 summer season.

The Government wanted a "full range" of recreational fishers to be involved, Mr Heatley said.

A separate project to start on October 1 would see recreational charter fishing boats report how often they go fishing and how much particular high value species of fish their customers were catching.
