The legislation that will replace the Foreshore and Seabed Act is open for public submissions and the Maori affairs select committee says its members are going to travel widely to hear them.

The Marine and Coastal Area (Takutai Moana) Bill repeals the Act and replaces it with legislation that removes the foreshore from seabed from Crown ownership and allows iwi to seek customary title to parts of it through the courts or through negotiation with the Government.

Committee chairman Tau Henare said today hearings would be held in locations including Invercargill, Christchurch, Blenheim, Wellington, Bay of Plenty, Hamilton, Auckland and Whangarei.

"We know a lot of New Zealanders have strong feelings about this issue," he said.

"We want to hear from everyone with an interest in the foreshore and seabed and the issues raised in the bill."
