Passengers on the Interislander ferry can now surf the web while they cross the Cook Strait.

Wi-Fi internet access was made available onboard the Interislander’s Kaitaki and Aratere ferries today, allowing passengers to send and receive emails or photos during the trip.

The service will soon be available on the Arahura ferry too.

Interislander product development manager Greg Smith said a recent trial had demonstrated people were willing to pay to use a Wi-Fi service onboard to get full use from their laptops iPods, smart phones and some gaming consoles.

Passengers can buy a $7 access card from the ferry’s shop onboard for up to 40MB worth of data to use anytime on their current journey.

Passengers could now take a photo of their journey through the beauty of Queen Charlotte Sound, and immediately share it with friends and family around the world via the internet, he said.

“That’s a valuable service for our customers, and a first for Cook Strait.”
