You know the hackers are good when they break into a technology site as was the case when Techcrunch got slammed by cyber criminals.

On Monday, at about 10:30pm, the main site of Techcrunch was hacked and redirected. The site was briefly back up at 11:30pm but then went down again. Techcrunch said on its site that it regained control of the site at around 2am.

This hack comes in the wake of several hacks that originated out of China, which targeted the Gmail accounts of human rights activists in China and other regions in the world who were campaigning for democracy in the country.

Techcrunch is not aware of how the site was compromised and is “still gathering information.”

AVG Technologies, anti-virus software provider, spokesperson Karel Obluk said; “The hacking of high profile technology site, Techcrunch, highlights how easy it is to become a target of hackers and that all of us, both consumers and businesses alike, are at risk all the time.

Mr Obluk said we should all ensure that our PCs and laptops are installed with the latest web scanning software.

“If sites are indeed hacked with the sole intent of infecting users’ PCs then choosing anti-virus software that is run on real-time tracking threats rather than a database-driven solutions, is of the utmost importance,” he said.
