The catfight between Telecom and Vodafone is heating up ahead of tomorrow's launch of the iPhone 4.
In a media statement titled "Telecom is ready for iPhone 4 users", Telecom says "smartphone users" who sign up for a new $38 500MB Smartphone Extra plan will be able to double their data to 1GB, and add 2500 text messages to any XT prepaid or postpaid voice plan.
However, the double-your-data deal will expire September 30.
And from August 1 Telecom will offer 50MB of data for $6, mirroring a similar deal recently introduced by 2degrees for its 2G network, and its 3G network. (2degrees 3G is now available to any 2degrees customer with a compatible device on an open-ended trial.)
Telecom Head of Marketing Management, Paul Taylor says, “Our XT network offers customers a great mobile data experience and we have added new data plans to our already competitive prices so Smartphone users can make the most of it.
Earlier this week, Telecom put iPhone 4 and iPad 3G-compatible Mico-SIM cards on sale, and announced two iPad-specific data plans.
Will Vodafone rollover 3GB free offer?
Vodafone has been offering iPhone users 3GB of free data a month on an open-ended basis. The offer was officially due to expire months ago, but Vodafone has continually extended it by another 30 days.
Will the free 3GB offer be rolled over again for August? [UPDATE - Vodafone now lists the offers as lasting until at least September 1.]
All a Vodafone spokesman would say was "stay tuned".
NBR's guess? It's in the bag.
