Telecom will double broadband data for customers on Total Home packages, permanently.

From August 1, customers on Total Home Starter, Lite and Total Home excluding Go and Pro add ons will receive twice as much broadband data as usual.

Total Home Broadband and the suite of optional add on packages would receive up to 20GB more data at no extra cost, Telecom said.

The increase will be automatic, the company said, and affected customers would see the changes to their plan on their August bill.

The company said the promotion would affect half a million customers and was in response to customers using, on average, a third more data than last year.

Orcon chief executive Scott Bartlett said Telecom was responding to the launch of its Genius product "which at $70 for 30GB of data still blitzes their promotion."

"I'm confident that Telecom's customers will vote with their feet in protest at this action which is truly too little too late."

Vodafone said it had increased its data allowances for fixed line customers by 50% on July 1.

"Our pricing still remains extremely competitive by comparison."

Vodafone said it also offered other benefits for fixed line customers including free My Sky, for Ideal and Ultimate packs which also provided unlimited calling to a favourite Vodafone mobile from the home line.

TelstraClear Product Management group manager Richard Bateman said the company was constantly reviewing its products and packages to ensure they met customer needs.

"Data caps are only one part of a customer’s experience, with quality, consistency and price among the others"

He said TelstraClear's products were high quality and the company operated a highly reliable network.
