Nine occupations have been added to Immigration New Zealand’s immediate skill shortage list, pointing to a growing skill shortage across many sectors.

While unemployment has risen in the last few years due to the stagnant economy, employers in certain industries have still struggled to fill some jobs.

Immigration New Zealand has two lists, immediate (ISSL) and long terms skill shortages (LTSSL), which make it easier to recruit workers from overseas to fill roles where a shortage is recognised.

In the latest review, nine occupations were added to the ISSL and one occupation - optometry - was removed as there was no longer a shortage.

Nine occupations added to the ISSL:

Pig Farmer (Department/Unit Manager)
Medical Technician (Clinical Dialysis Technician)
Electronic Equipment Trades Worker
Metal Machinist (First Class) (CNC Machinist)
Metal Casting Trades Worker (Foundry Moulder)
Motorcycle Mechanic
Clinical Coder
Poultry Farmer (Broiler Breeder/Breeder Farm Manager)
Baker
