The Spark army

Personally, I don't mind the name Spark.

And quite a few in the NZ business community like it too, judging by the numbers who've already adopted the name, or a close variant.

NBR's web development contractor, Sparks, certainly perked up its ears when Telecom announced its pending name change (and more so because the company's services wing, Gen-i, is becoming Spark Digital Solutions.

How many  others will be doing the same? I ran a quick Companies Office search and ... I couldn't find out because I ran up against the sites's 200 search result limit.

Then there's the issue of website addresses. Telecom has secured Spark.co.nz. But with the site inactive for the moment, Google helpfully points you to Spark.com - where you won't find telecommunications services, but you might find love.

Telecom also owns Spark.kiwi.nz and Spark.gent.nz, but Spark.net.nz is owned by Wintec, who use it to promote the Spark International Media, Arts & Design festival. Spark.ac.nz is owned by Auckland University but inactive, and the dormant Spark.net.nz is registered to Vodafone. The company inherited the URL when it bought TelstraClear.

Spark.school.nz would be a good one for Telecom to nab - especially with CEO Simon Moutter touting his company's giant UFB contract with Crown company Network For Learning (N4L) during Friday's results call. But that one's held (but not actively used) by mobile and web hosting Modica Group.
