Nine lucky execs and managers are off to some of the world’s finest learning institutions, courtesy of the first round of the PM’s Business Scholarships.

The scholarships cover the cost of studying at an internationally-recognised, world-class business school, including course fees, airfares, and accommodation.

The scheme will assist members of the business community who are “adding real value to New Zealand’s economy and who have the potential to add even more”, PM John Key said in a release today.

“They will learn about, and bring back, a range of business skills to help their firms thrive in an international environment.”

This year's scholarship round is expected to cost about $500,000.

Mr Key announced the scholarships today at Parliament – and admitted that he was envious of the experiences awaiting the recipients.

“When I was at Merrill Lynch, I got sent to Harvard a couple of times for courses that we ran... and one of the things I’d like to do one day is go back and do an MBA there.”

He told the recipients that they would find their studies “invigorating”.

“If your experience is anything like mine, you’ll come back with a Rolodex – or these days, probably an iPhone – with a lot more contacts that will help you for the rest of your professional career."

This year’s winners have applied for courses at institutions including the London Business School, University of Sydney, INSEAD, Stanford Business School, Columbia University, Harvard, Wharton School, and Parsons Design School.

The recipients of the 2010 Prime Minister’s Business Scholarships are:

- Marina Hirst-Tristram (Marketing Manager, Tasman Bay Food Group)
- Robbie Allan (Strategy Executive at NDA Group)

- Jasper Holdsworth (Managing Director, Pultorn Composites Ltd)
- Ben Campbell (Market/Product Manager at Access Pacific Ltd)
- Adam Muldoon (Wind Development Manager at Meridian Energy)

- Martin Cox (Investment Manager at HRL Morrison and Co)

- Simon Limmer (General Manager, Zespri Global Supply)
- Gregory Managh (General Manager at EBOS Group Ltd)

- Carol Ward (Director of Corporate and Grower Services at Zespri International)

Economic Development Minister Gerry Brownlee and NZTE chief executive Peter Chrisp also spoke at today’s presentation.

Mr Chrisp helped select the scholarship recipients, alongside business leader Wendy Lush and management professor Colin Campbell-Hunt.

The scholarships will run again in 2011. Funding beyond this date is uncertain.
