In the United States a Minnesota woman has been ordered to pay $US1.5 million by a court for illegally downloading 24 songs.

The single mum of four, Jammie Thomas-Rasset, was convicted by a jury for copyright infringement for using peer-to-peer software KaZaA to download songs over the internet.

Each song has now cost her $US62,500.

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has been chasing the case and did offer to settle, but this was rejected.

Ms Thomas Rasset was previously convicted for the same crime in 2007 and ordered to pay $US220,000 by a jury, but a judge rejected the verdict labelling it oppressive.
